Of all the peripheral devices we use for games, the devices we use to hear and be heard can have a huge impact on our overall experience. At MMORPG.com, we have worn and tested many gaming headsets-from enthusiasts to RGB color explosions to Emmy award-winning products, each one has its own unique utility in this field. Beyerdynamic launched the MMX 150 Studio-class USB gaming headset on this broad stage. Can it stand the test? 

Let us find out.

Although the name of this company may not impress you, you may have seen their work. After all, Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO has always been the headset of choice for the live broadcast giant Ninja. There is a good reason for this: Beyerdynamic has been innovating and creating products in the professional audio field for nearly 100 years! With such experience, there will be a kind of motivation to stick to the tradition-this is the tradition that MMX 150 was born.

MMX 150 was released together with the analog-only MMX 100, designed to be a studio-grade headset for gamers, offering analog and digital connectivity options. With a USB-C to USB-A cable and a USB-C to 3.5 mm jack, the MMX 150 can be used flexibly between different environments. However, connection versatility is not all that MMX 150 must provide. It also has a detachable microphone and a real-time monitoring mode beyerdynamic called an enhanced mode.

In enhanced mode, MMX 150 uses an external microphone located on the side of the headset to monitor your surroundings, fundamentally transforming the user experience of these closed headsets into a more open feeling. If you share your living space with people who don’t want to be turned away, but still have the option to escape the immersive gaming experience when no one is there, then this option is great! Before we discuss how the enhanced mode affects the user's gaming experience, we must first talk about another outstanding feature of this headset: the microphone. 

In my opinion, one of the biggest tragedies of many modern gaming headsets is the poor quality of their microphones. This is a far cry from the situation of Beyerdynamic MMX 150. The sound quality is one of the best I have heard in a headset microphone, and it is even comparable to some standalone microphones I have heard in recent years.

The quality can be attributed to the type of microphone used: electret capacitor. Condenser microphones are known for producing better sound clarity over a wide range, but usually require up to 48V from an external power source to power them. Using electret capacitors, the microphone diaphragm can operate at a significantly lower voltage (~2V) because the microphone back plate is pre-charged with a higher voltage at the factory. Although the clarity is different from a decent condenser, it is ahead of the competition.

Speaking of listening, "studio-grade" headphones can only be described as such if they produce this level of sound quality! So, how does MMX 150 function in the real world?

To test this, I conducted rigorous audio testing on the MMX 150s-I ran a series of samples of audio equipment and gaming experience to test high-end, mid-range, and low-end response in various environments. For this test, the choice of music included everything from symphony scores, technical rock, funk and EDM (heavy bass and ambient music) to spoken language. 

After running these tests, this is what I found:

The overall audio experience of the beyerdynamic MMX 150 Studio-class USB gaming headset is very pleasant. In terms of gaming experience, MMX 150 provides a rich balance between in-game effects and narrative rhythm, without any performance between explosions, gunshots, sweeping soundtracks, and environmental effects. Even at low volume, the soundscape it provides is full-which is great because these headphones make a loud sound!

In our audio range, the MMX 150 performs well, but where it really excels is in more EDM-style settings or heavy bass and drum sounds. Although it performs well in other places, in these specific environments, the MMX 150 has the opportunity to show off, providing clear sound in the low range without making the bass frequencies of the mix mix or sacrificing high or mid-to-high frequencies. . 

Before we end, we really need to go back to the discussion enhancement mode. Overall, the model is surprisingly good! In some gaming experiences, especially the open world in Destiny 2, the enhanced mode makes the environment feel more natural or airy. However, at higher volumes, it becomes more difficult to distinguish its impact on the experience. Where it really comes in handy in Discord conversations. It turns out that being able to actually hear your speaking volume while wearing headphones... is a great boon for people who share the space with you.

In general, my experience with Beyerdynamic MMX 150 studio-grade USB gaming headset is a positive experience. Headphones provide a wide range of soundscapes in a variety of media types. We found that it can provide high-quality sound at a lower volume even in a bass-rich environment. The listening experience can only be compared to the microphone quality-both speak well!

The enhanced mode provides an interesting option for people who want to enjoy the benefits of open and closed headphones at the same time, but only want a pair of headphones. This extra feature is particularly useful in settings where users want to choose to maintain interaction with their surroundings or self-monitoring during voice chat conversations. In other words, it provides a mode of listening and being heard...without being heard by the whole house!

Among all these positive features and performance, the construction of the Beyerdynamic MMX 150 may be the most boring part of the headset itself. However, many of the main stress or hinge points (as far as we know) are made of plastic, which will not be very durable over time, which makes me a little worried about the life of the MMX 150. That being said, we have seen many headphones with similar build quality in this price range. I don't think that the MMX 150 is cheap, but if I don't point it out, I will be negligent. This structure really keeps the headset beautiful and light during a long game.
